This cuvée is not made to a recipe, rather as a selection of the best from each vintage. In 2023, due to the weather induced by Cyclone Gabrielle, which landed in early February (the second or third), the strongest performer was the Cabernet Sauvignon due to bunch architecture, small berries, thick skins and, in this case, the low-vigor rootstocks and the chicory in between the rows. Te Mata invests heavily into research and development in the vineyards, which really assists in a vintage like 2023, which imposes challenges. The elevation in all aspects of this wine from the already tremendously impressive Awatea is significant. Here, the tannins have a finer grain, the fruit is more persistent and the package is far more integrated and seamless. With raspberry, iodine, crushed shells, nori, pressed flowers, new lead pencil, tobacco, bramble and cassis, it is magnificent. Raw cocoa and the gentle and subtle creep of game/gristle/blood and sweet marrow indicate its direction later in life. I love this wine. There's more clay here and more organic matter than in Moncerbal, so the cooler nights don't manage to cool the soil down; the grapes have a more steady ripeness, and the wines are a little more generous. 3,752 bottles, 86 magnums and some larger formats produced. From very early on, Moncerbal shone and felt to be among the finest vintages for this paraje. 2021 was an atypical year, cooler but with a warm and dry end of the season. They harvested some grapes at the end of August, and then they had to stop because the grapes wouldn't ripen! So, Pétalos has only 13.5% alcohol. Some wines have a reductive character; it was a cooler and dry year, and the wines show that character, continental and cold, despite the heat in July and August. The wines are juicy and aromatic, a lot fresher than they anticipated. The wines have contained alcohol (all around 13.5%) and a narrower profile. It should be a long-lived vintage, perhaps not as juicy as the 2018s but with very good balance and freshness. Now from bottle and with the perspective of time, the wines are evolving nicely, perhaps not reaching the heights of 2018, but with elegance and grace, slowly. Starting in 2021, all the wines except Pétalos are certified organic.

2022 was a very challenging year, but surprisingly, the wines are more balanced and better than what they expected. The alcohol is lower than expected, the vines got blocked, it was very warm and dry, or at least the alcohol didn't go that high, but the acidity started dropping. Yields were high, and the white grapes were very good; they used a lot of white grapes, almost to the allowed 10% to 12%, when they normally use between 6% and 8%. The prices for the 2022s had not yet been set at the time of tasting.

So far, 2023 looks like a very good and cool year but with a massive mildew attack, even more in lower parts of Bierzo in the valley floor than in the higher-altitude zones like the slopes of Corullón.

Their village red from younger vines he planted in different parts of Briones is the 2022 Viñas Jóvenes, a blend of 92% Tempranillo, 5% Graciano and 3% Garnacha. When Luciano Sandrone planted here over 30 years ago, Roero was still largely dismissed as peripheral to Barolo and Barbaresco. Drawing on his experience working Roero fruit at Marchesi di Barolo, he saw its potential early, despite the challenges: extreme 50% slopes, highly sandy soils prone to drought and erosion, and the significant investment required to terrace and replant the vineyard.

Today, Valmaggiore is farmed with meticulous, largely organic practices and strict fruit selection to preserve purity and precision. The result is a distinctly lifted and perfumed style of Nebbiolo that stands apart from the denser, more structured expressions of Barolo and Barbaresco. It leans toward elegance, aromatics, and finesse, often drawing comparisons to Burgundy in its texture and aromatic profile.

Vinification is carried out in tank, followed by malolactic fermentation and maturation in old French demi-muids for approximately 9–12 months. The wine draws from a mosaic of small parcels across Barolo, Serralunga d’Alba, Novello, Castiglione Falletto and Monforte d’Alba, each contributing a distinct structural and aromatic dimension shaped by altitude, exposure and soil diversity. From 2021, fruit from the Le Coste di Monforte holding (farmed since 2000) is also included, further expanding the wine’s structural range.

A portion of the fermentation (around 20–30%) is conducted with whole clusters, while the remainder benefits from a high proportion of whole berries thanks to advanced destemming technology. There is both brightness and depth, with an underlying sense of tension and energy that gives the wine drive and longevity.
