Sourced from mature vines rooted in gravel and clay, the wine opens with deep currents of blackcurrant, dark plum and violets, laced with cedar, graphite and gentle spice. On the palate it moves with grace and authority, layered and precise, its fine tannins and fresh acidity carrying a long, resonant finish. A wine of depth and restraint, it reflects both the enduring legacy of Te Mata and the classical soul of Hawke’s Bay.

The 2023 Coleraine comprises 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc. This cuvée is not made to a recipe, rather as a selection of the best from each vintage. In 2023, due to the weather induced by Cyclone Gabrielle, which landed in early February (the second or third), the strongest performer was the Cabernet Sauvignon due to bunch architecture, small berries, thick skins and, in this case, the low-vigor rootstocks and the chicory in between the rows. Te Mata invests heavily into research and development in the vineyards, which really assists in a vintage like 2023, which imposes challenges. The elevation in all aspects of this wine from the already tremendously impressive Awatea is significant. Here, the tannins have a finer grain, the fruit is more persistent and the package is far more integrated and seamless. With raspberry, iodine, crushed shells, nori, pressed flowers, new lead pencil, tobacco, bramble and cassis, it is magnificent. Raw cocoa and the gentle and subtle creep of game/gristle/blood and sweet marrow indicate its direction later in life. I love this wine. I think I write that every time I taste it. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under natural cork. 98 Pts, Drink 2024-2043 - Erin Larkin, The Wine Advocate

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0843/3428/0897/files/97835D5C-F0D3-468C-BFC7-88490F9F8864.jpg?v=1771155754
te-mata-awatea-cabernet-merlot-2023
Te Mata Estate Awatea Cabernets Merlot 2023 Hawke's Bay

From Te Mata Estate, one of New Zealand’s oldest and most celebrated wineries, founded in 1896 and still family owned, crafting benchmark reds in Hawke’s Bay. Sourced from selected vineyard sites with gravelly and clay soils, the 2023 vintage shows aromas of blackcurrant, dark plum, cassis and subtle spice, underpinned by cedar and graphite. On the palate it is elegant yet powerful, with layered fruit, fine tannins, bright acidity and a long, polished finish that reflects both the richness of Hawke’s Bay terroir and Te Mata’s century long commitment to precision and balance.

The 2023 Awatea Cabernets Merlot comprises 52% Merlot, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc. Aromatically, this wine is thrilling: dusty cassis, bramble, raspberry pip, blood/iodine, sweet tobacco, raw cocoa, violet perfume, tarragon and fennel and a hint of hazelnut/nutmeg. In the mouth, the wine is savory, structural, spicy and chewy, with a ductile splay of tannin that moves across the palate and through the finish. The palate speaks of structure and shape, while the fruit is mostly on the nose at this early stage. This will evolve beautifully in bottle over time, and as the bottle I am tasting here today was bottled four weeks ago, no doubt your bottle will look more polished and sleek. As it is, I love it, but I am sure I will like it more in time. It is a magnificent wine and a tremendous value. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under 44-millimeter Diam 10 cork (usually it's a 44-millimeter natural cork). Next year it will be a 49-millimeter Diam 10 cork. 96 Pts, Drink 2024-2043 - Erin Larkin, The Wine Advocate

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0843/3428/0897/files/E8BBB014-B461-41A3-BC87-11A0D761F08B.jpg?v=1771155166
