Marius Bielle Merlot 2018 is a distinctive, low-intervention expression of Lalande-de-Pomerol from Bordeaux’s Right Bank, crafted by Damien Bielle, whose experience includes time at both Château Cheval Blanc and Pétrus. Produced from organically farmed vineyards on gravelly and sandy soils, the wine reflects a philosophy centred on terroir, balance and minimal cellar manipulation.

The wine is overwhelmingly Merlot-based, sourced from vineyards managed according to organic and biodynamic principles. Fermentation occurs naturally with indigenous yeasts, and the wine is matured in concrete rather than oak, preserving purity of fruit and site expression. It is bottled unfined and unfiltered with low sulphur, resulting in a style that feels authentic, vibrant and unforced.

The 2018 vintage offers generous aromas of plum, black cherry and old rose, layered with fresh herbs, earth, spice and subtle mineral notes. The palate is medium to full-bodied, combining rich dark fruit with freshness and structure. There is a savoury, stony character running through the wine, supported by fine tannins and a saline edge that brings energy and length to the finish.

Far removed from heavily extracted modern Bordeaux, this is a more traditional and drinkable interpretation of Lalande-de-Pomerol, prioritising texture, perfume and balance over power. A characterful Merlot that shows the elegance and charm of Bordeaux’s Right Bank through a natural winemaking lens.
