Pio Cesare Barolo “Pio” DOCG 2019

Regular price $168
Regular price $168

A distinguished expression from Pio Cesare, one of Piedmont’s most historic and prestigious houses, founded in 1881 and renowned for crafting classic, terroir focused wines with depth and longevity. Sourced from a selection of top Nebbiolo vineyards across key Barolo communes, the 2019 vintage opens with aromas of red cherry, wild rose, dried herbs, fine spice and hints of forest floor, underpinned by subtle oak influence from patient ageing. On the palate it offers layered fruit, refined tannins and vibrant acidity, with a structured yet graceful frame and a long, persistent finish that reflects the complexity of Nebbiolo and Pio Cesare’s commitment to traditional Barolo style. This wine balances early appeal with the capacity to evolve beautifully in bottle.

Pio Cesare does a great job with its classic 2019 Barolo (in production since 1881). The bottom of the front label reads "Barolo Pio" in memory of the legendary Pio Boffa. He was a wine entrepreneur who gained the immediate respect and love of all those who knew him. He passed away tragically during the COVID-19 pandemic just as the vaccines were being rolled out. This is a large production of about 70,000 bottles with fruit sourced from across seven vineyards in five villages. Despite those ambitious numbers, the wine remains strictly focused on bright Nebbiolo fruit with red cassis and aniseed. The finish is smooth with tannins that elegantly dissolve over the palate. 95 Pts, Drink 2024-2044 - Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate
