Domaine Milan Clos Milan Rouge 2022 Provence
Henri Milan Clos Milan Rouge 2022 is the estate's flagship red from Provence and one of the most complete expressions of the domaine's approach to low-intervention winemaking combined with serious vineyard structure.
The Clos Milan has a long history. The vineyard sits directly in front of Henri's house — a deeply personal plot that has shaped the domaine's identity for decades. Older vintages were drawn from very old vines, but the vineyard was replanted relatively recently, and this 2022 is made from young vines now approximately 12 years old. The soil is stony clay and limestone over a subsoil of yellow sand, a combination that brings both mineral tension and a quiet, earthy depth to the wine.
The 2022 blend is built around Grenache and Syrah, with supporting Carignan and Cinsault depending on parcel selection. Yields are kept low and harvest decisions are driven by phenolic ripeness rather than sugar levels. Whole bunches are macerated for approximately five days with a daily pump over before pressing. The juice is then aged for one year in old oak barrels, followed by a further year in tank — a patient, unhurried approach that allows the wine to find its shape without force.
On the nose it shows ripe black cherry, plum, and wild raspberry, layered with Provençal garrigue, black olive, violet, and a subtle peppery spice. Darker and more concentrated than the lighter Milan cuvées, but it remains lifted rather than heavy.
The palate asserts itself with medium to full body and fine but present tannins that give real shape and structure. The fruit is ripe but controlled, supported by a fresh acid line that prevents any sense of excess. A savoury, earthy depth builds through the mid-palate, leading into a long, structured finish with mineral and herbal persistence.
Approachable now with air, it will comfortably evolve with short to medium-term bottle age. Highly recommended with lamb, prepared any way you like.
