Pedro Parra 'Imaginador' Cinsault 2023 Chile
Pedro Parra is one of the most fascinating personalities in Chilean wine. Known internationally as Dr Terroir, he holds a PhD in terroir studies and has spent more than two decades travelling the world, studying soils and helping some of the finest producers understand their vineyards. In 2013, he turned his attention to his own wines in Chile's historic Itata Valley, determined to reveal the extraordinary potential of its ancient vines and decomposed granite soils.
Imaginador is a beautiful introduction to Pedro's work. Made entirely from Cinsault grown in the hills of Guarilihue, it draws on old, traditionally farmed vineyards rooted in the region's distinctive granitic soils. These vineyards are part of a winemaking landscape with more than two centuries of history, largely untouched by the industrialisation that transformed much of Chilean wine.
The grapes are harvested by hand and fermented with whole bunches and indigenous yeasts, before ageing in concrete and oak. The 2023 is wonderfully fragrant, with wild strawberries, cranberries, red cherries, dried herbs and delicate spice. Bright acidity, fine tannins and a distinctly mineral finish give it remarkable freshness and character.
A beautifully honest Cinsault, full of energy, elegance and a real sense of place. Exactly the kind of Chilean wine we love discovering.
