Tubarão Vinhos Fera Tinto 2024
Tubarão Vinhos is one of the most interesting little projects to emerge from Portugal's Atlantic coast. Founded by Márcio Lopes and Ricardo Garrido in Póvoa de Varzim, just north of Porto, the project is dedicated to preserving a remarkable piece of Portuguese viticultural history. Here, vines are grown in traditional campos de masseira, extraordinary sunken fields dug into coastal sand dunes, a farming system dating back centuries that protects crops from the fierce Atlantic winds. These historic vineyards are increasingly rare, and Tubarão is helping keep this wonderful tradition alive.
Fera Tinto 2024 is a wonderfully old-school expression of Vinho Verde red, made predominantly from Vinhão with a little Loureiro. Fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts and bottled unfiltered with minimal sulphur, the wine completes its malolactic fermentation in bottle, leaving a delicate natural spritz. It's a style that locals have been drinking chilled for generations, and once you taste it, it's easy to understand why.
Deeply coloured but surprisingly light on its feet, with juicy blackberries, sour cherries, wild berries and a little earthy, herbal character. The acidity is wonderfully lively, almost electric, with a gentle fizz, very little weight and a refreshing, mouthwatering finish.
Forget everything you think you know about dark Portuguese reds. This is bright, crunchy, slightly wild and ridiculously refreshing. Give it a proper chill and enjoy one of Portugal's most charming and wonderfully unconventional wine traditions. Pure Atlantic drinking.
