Colome Estate Malbec Salta 2023
A powerful yet finely structured Malbec from the high Andes of Salta, the 2023 Estate Malbec from Bodega Colomé captures one of the most extreme and compelling terroirs in world viticulture.
Founded over 180 years ago, Bodega Colomé is the oldest working winery in Argentina, with historic vineyard material that includes old Malbec selections originally brought from Bordeaux in the 19th century. The estate remains one of the most remote in the world, operating entirely off-grid with hydroelectric power generated from Andean snowmelt.
Vineyards are planted at extraordinary altitude across three key sites: Estate vineyards at 2400 metres, El Arenal at 2700 metres and Altura Máxima at 3100 metres, making it among the highest planted vineyards on earth. These extreme conditions, with intense UV exposure and cold night temperatures, produce wines of remarkable colour, aromatic lift and natural acidity.
The 2023 Estate Malbec opens with concentrated aromas of blackberry, plum, violet, black cherry and crushed herbs, layered with graphite, spice and a subtle earthy mineral edge. The palate is structured yet vibrant, driven by firm but polished tannins and a core of fresh acidity that brings lift and definition to the fruit.
Despite its power and concentration, there is a clear savoury tension running through the wine, balancing richness with precision and length. The finish is long, dark fruited and finely grippy, reflecting both altitude and purity of site.
A benchmark high altitude Malbec defined by intensity, freshness and unmistakable sense of place.
