Hofgut Falkenstein “Kugel Peter” Krettnacher Euchariusberg Riesling Kabinett 2024
Hofgut Falkenstein “Kugel Peter” Krettnacher Euchariusberg Riesling Kabinett 2024 is a single-fuder bottling from one of the Saar’s most precise and uncompromising traditional producers, Erich and Johannes Weber. The wine comes from the steep, slate-and-quartz-driven Krettnacher Euchariusberg vineyard, specifically parcels in the Gross Schock sector, planted with old, partially ungrafted vines. It is a site defined by razor-sharp acidity, smoky slate minerality and intense aromatic lift.
“Kugel Peter” is not a separate vineyard but an internal cask (Fuder) designation, meaning this wine is a snapshot of a specific barrel selection within the vintage rather than a blended estate cuvée. Each Fuder is vinified separately, reinforcing Falkenstein’s philosophy of extreme parcel transparency and cask-level expression.
The 2024 vintage continues the estate’s style of low-intervention winemaking: spontaneous fermentation in traditional large oak casks, very low alcohol (around 7%), and a balance that typically sits between off-dry and delicately dry depending on the year. The result is a Kabinett that prioritises tension and drinkability over overt sweetness or polish.
In the glass, “Kugel Peter” is typically extremely pure and high-definition: lime zest, green apple, white peach and citrus oil sit over a core of wet slate, smoke and herbal lift. The palate is light-bodied but densely structured in a linear sense, with electric acidity and a faint natural spritz giving it energy and lift. The finish is long, saline and sharply focused, with a distinctive Saar austerity that rewards time in bottle.
This is not a soft or easy Kabinett; it is a highly detailed, almost architectural expression of Riesling where precision, energy and site expression matter more than immediate fruit charm.
