Sami-Odi Hoffmann Dallwitz Syrah 2017 Barossa Valley
A compilation of the finest and most regal casks drawn from the Hoffmann family’s two oldest plantings, DW-OLD and ER-27. The gnarled DW-OLD block was planted between 1888 and 1912, with the adjacent ER-27 planted in 1927. In the generous and even 2017 season, both sites produced a relaxed, plush expression of deep red earth fruit, sitting at the heart of this release.
The wine was assembled from 19 Burgundian pièces after a 77 week élevage, then bottled without fining, filtration or sparging. All handling was completed by gravity, preserving texture and natural detail. Yields ranged between 31 and 43 hectolitres per hectare, and 4,961 bottles were filled. Label artwork features Hostel details on ‘ODI’ paper drawn Chiavari 2001, with rear label “Andy’s Pear” printed in 2017.
In the glass this shows a more open and generous profile compared to the tighter Little Wine releases. There is immediate depth of black cherry, plum and blackberry, layered with olive tapenade, spice, dried herbs and a subtle floral lift. The fruit feels darker and more settled, shaped by the warmth and generosity of the season, but still finely detailed.
The palate is where the structure reveals itself. There is real concentration, yet it is carried with a plush, flowing texture rather than weight or density. Tannins are fine and integrated, giving gentle grip and shape through the mid-palate. Layers of dark fruit, spice, earth and pepper unfold gradually, with a natural acidity providing balance and drive. The finish is long, savoury and quietly powerful, echoing earth and spice more than overt fruit.
This sits in an important place within the Sami-Odi range, showing a more complete and generous expression of Hoffmann Dallwitz fruit while still retaining the house style of detail, restraint and texture. It captures both the depth of ancient vines and the relaxed structure of the 2017 season, resulting in a wine that is open, composed and quietly authoritative.
