Frontonio Microcosmico Grenache 2024
Microcósmico Garnacha 2024 from Bodegas Frontonio is a pure, high-altitude expression of old-vine Grenache from Aragón, crafted from certified organic vineyards planted on calcareous clay-sandy soils at 500–700 metres elevation. The altitude and poor soils bring a natural tension and lift to the wine, giving it a sense of freshness and precision that sets it apart from more sun-drenched styles of Garnacha. In the glass it is bright and vibrant, with an aromatic profile of fresh red cherry, wild strawberry, raspberry and rose petals, layered with subtle herbal tones, crushed stone minerality and a faint spice note from the old vines and careful élevage.
The palate is medium-bodied, supple and beautifully balanced, showing a seamless combination of juicy red fruit, fine-grained tannins and a mineral core that gives shape and length rather than weight. There is an energetic, almost cool-climate feel to the fruit despite the Spanish origin, with clarity and freshness driving the wine from start to finish. It is structured enough to have presence at the table, yet open and approachable in youth, making it highly versatile with food ranging from grilled lamb and roasted vegetables to charcuterie and tapas-style dishes.
Critically, it has been recognised for its quality and detail, with 93 points from The Wine Advocate (Luis Gutiérrez) noting its complexity, depth and mineral texture, and 93 points from The Wine Front (Gary Walsh) highlighting its freshness and immediate drinkability. This is a modern, terroir-driven Garnacha that prioritises finesse over power, offering a compelling introduction to the new generation of high-altitude Spanish wines.
