Domaine de Ferrand Cotes du Rhone 'Vieilles Vignes' 2023
Domaine de Ferrand Côtes du Rhône Vieilles Vignes 2023 is sourced from remarkably old vines planted just metres from the boundary of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, separated from the famous appellation by little more than a country road. Farmed organically by Philippe Bravay with the same meticulous approach applied to the domaine’s Châteauneuf holdings, this wine consistently punches well above its classification.
The blend is led by approximately 85% Grenache from very old vines, including parcels planted in 1920, complemented by small amounts of Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault. The combination of ancient vines, low yields and exceptional terroir gives the wine a depth and concentration rarely encountered at the Côtes du Rhône level.
The 2023 vintage is rich, expressive and unmistakably Southern Rhône in character, offering layers of ripe raspberry, black cherry and plum fruit alongside notes of wild herbs, anise, spice and black olive. The palate is generous and textured yet remains fresh and balanced, with fine tannins and impressive length carrying the wine to a savoury finish.
Often described as a “baby Châteauneuf-du-Pape”, this is one of the Rhône Valley’s great value wines, delivering remarkable complexity, concentration and authenticity at a fraction of the price of its famous neighbour.
“Powerful and aromatic with stacks of anise and cloves. Rich and concentrated on the full-bodied palate but with red-fruit aromas, plus really fine tannins and good freshness.”
