Movia Lunar Rebula Brda Slovenia Orange 2023 (1000ml)
From the Brda hills of western Slovenia, right on the Italian border, Movia is one of the region’s defining names, responsible for putting Slovenian fine wine on the international map in the late 1990s. The estate has deep roots in Ceglo, with family winemaking traditions stretching back generations, and a reputation built on independence, low intervention farming and a very individual stylistic identity.
Today it is led by Aleš Kristančič, a producer known for an uncompromising approach in both vineyard and cellar. The estate is farmed organically and biodynamically, with no synthetic herbicides, pesticides or fungicides, and a strong focus on expressing site through minimal intervention winemaking. Rebula (Ribolla Gialla) is one of the key varieties here, and one of the most important grapes for understanding Brda’s high-acid, mineral-driven white wine profile.
“Lunar” is a skin-contact expression of Rebula, typically aged in old oak and bottled without filtration, giving it a more textured and extended profile compared to the estate’s classic bottlings. The 2023 reflects this approach clearly.
It opens with citrus peel, dried apricot and yellow apple, followed by chamomile, honeyed herbs and a distinct nutty, slightly oxidative edge. There is a deeper aromatic range than a standard white, shaped by extended lees and skin contact.
On the palate it is structured and dry, with phenolic grip giving shape and definition. Acidity runs through the core, keeping the wine lifted despite its textural depth. Flavours shift between citrus oil, dried stone fruit and savoury herbal notes, finishing long with a saline, slightly tannic edge.
A serious, textural expression of Rebula that sits firmly in Movia’s bold, uncompromising style, showing Brda’s capacity for structured, skin-driven whites with real ageing potential.
