Domaine Milan Le Grand Blanc 2019 Provence
Perhaps Domaine Milan's most iconic cuvée, Le Grand Blanc is a wine built to age — up to 20 years, according to the domaine. And they do the first part of that aging themselves. This 2019 spent 12 months in old oak barrels, followed by a further five years in a concrete tank before being bottled in May 2025. Patient, unhurried, and deeply considered.
The blend is Chardonnay, Muscat à Petit Grains, Grenache Blanc, Rolle, and Roussanne — all direct-pressed and co-fermented. The vines are approximately 35 years old, rooted in silty clay over a subsoil of blue marl, a combination that brings both weight and a quiet, stony tension to the wine.
The Milans describe it beautifully: "Exceptionally fresh. Aromas of fennel and garrigue dominate the nose and palate, with a long, stony finish that underscores its minerality." We also love longtime cellar master Sébastien Xavier's reaction when we tasted it with him last year. He simply said: "It gives me goosebumps." He has helped make this wine for 20 years. That says everything.
On the nose it opens with layered citrus — lemon peel, preserved lemon, and grapefruit — alongside white peach, pear, and subtle floral notes. With time in the glass, more complex tones emerge: almond, chamomile, beeswax, and a faint saline, Mediterranean herbal edge.
The palate is medium-bodied with a broad but defined texture, carried by a firm line of acidity that keeps everything focused. There is both volume and precision, with a gentle phenolic grip adding shape through the mid-palate. The finish is long, dry, and slightly saline, with a mineral persistence that speaks clearly of its Provençal origins.
Approachable now with air, it has the frame to evolve and reward patience. One of the best vintages of Le Grand Blanc we have tasted.
