Gut Oggau Atanasius Rot Red Burgenland Austria 2023

Deep ruby with a slightly cloudy, natural edge, Rot 2023 is a raw, high-energy natural red that sits firmly in the low-intervention Austrian/Germanic natural wine orbit — built on texture, volatility of aroma, and pure drinkability.

Sourced from organically farmed vineyards (exact parcels vary by bottling lot and vintage selection), the cuvée is typically a field-style blend of red varieties dominated by Pinot Noir and Blaufränkisch, with possible small supporting components depending on harvest conditions. The 2023 vintage leans into freshness, with a cooler structural frame that keeps the wine lifted rather than heavy.

Vinification is deliberately minimal: spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, whole-bunch influence in parts, very gentle extraction and ageing in neutral vessels, with no fining or filtration. The aim is immediacy and energy rather than polish or control.

The nose is vivid and slightly wild — crushed red berries, sour cherry, cranberry and plum skin, layered with rosehip, blood orange and a faint ferrous, earthy edge. There is a subtle fermentative lift that adds complexity rather than dominance.

On the palate, the wine is light in body but driven in character: juicy red fruit upfront, fine-grained tannins underneath, and a bright, almost electric acidity that gives it shape and momentum. The finish is dry, slightly savoury and saline, with lingering notes of spice and wild herbs.
