Gut Oggau Josephine Rot Red Burgenland Austria 2022
Bright ruby with a translucent core, Josephine 2022 is one of the more refined, quietly structured voices in the Gut Oggau family — a wine that balances purity of fruit with a composed, almost introspective depth.
Produced by Stephanie and Eduard Tscheppe-Eselböck in Burgenland, the cuvée is based on a blend of Blaufränkisch and Roesler, sourced from biodynamically farmed vineyards. The 2022 vintage brings clarity and lift, with fine structure and a distinctly elegant frame.
As with all Gut Oggau wines, farming is certified under Demeter, and cellar work is minimal: spontaneous fermentation, gentle extraction and ageing in neutral vessels, with no fining or filtration.
The nose is finely detailed — sour cherry, redcurrant and wild strawberry, layered with rose petal, blood orange and a subtle herbal edge. There is a quiet earthiness beneath, adding depth without weight.
On the palate, the wine is poised and linear, with fine, chalky tannins and a fresh line of acidity carrying the fruit. It feels precise rather than powerful, with a long, savoury finish marked by spice, mineral tension and a faintly ferrous note.
