Mataburro Otium 2025
Laurent Roger and Mélissa Ingrand are behind Mataburro, a tiny estate in Roussillon where old family vines, Catalan heritage and an uncompromising approach to natural winemaking come together. Their close relationship with the late Alain Castex continues to shape their work, particularly in the vineyards they inherited from his care.
Otium 2025 is made from 90% Grenache Noir, sourced from 80 year old massal selection vines planted by Laurent's grandfather in Espira-de-l'Agly. This old Grenache produces naturally pale fruit with very little tannin, allowing the character of the vineyard to come through.
The Grenache Noir was infused for 11 days alongside Grenache Gris from the Fourques vineyard previously farmed by Alain Castex. The wine was then aged in a concrete tank that once belonged to Castex himself.
Pale pink in colour but considerably more complex than its appearance suggests, Otium sits somewhere between a rosé and a very light red. Delicate fruit, subtle savoury complexity and a gentle bitterness on the finish make it particularly intriguing. Best enjoyed chilled.
