Alkina 'Estate' Grenache 2025
Alkina is one of the most exciting estates to emerge from the Barossa Valley in recent years. Established in 2015 near Greenock, the project brings together historic vineyards, organic and biodynamic farming and an extraordinary dedication to understanding the land. Working with renowned terroir specialist Pedro Parra, the team has mapped the estate's complex geology, identifying individual parcels according to their soils and geological character.
The Estate Grenache is Alkina's interpretation of a Burgundian village wine, bringing together fruit from different parcels to express the wider character of the property. The 2025 is the second release of this cuvée, drawing predominantly from old Grenache vines, some around 70 years of age, alongside a smaller proportion of younger plantings. The fruit is entirely estate-grown and certified organic and biodynamic.
The 2025 growing season produced naturally low yields and beautifully concentrated fruit. Wild strawberries, ripe plums and pomegranate are joined by dried flowers, Mediterranean herbs and a lovely amaro-like savouriness. The palate is wonderfully energetic, with bright natural acidity, fine mineral tannins and a long, beautifully structured finish.
A brilliant example of modern Barossa Grenache. Pure, elegant and full of character, with enough depth to reward a few years in the cellar, although we suspect it will be difficult to resist opening now.
