S.Caica Field Blend Merlot Vermentino 2025
Expected arrival: Week commencing 2 November.
Simon Caica is one of the exciting new faces of McLaren Vale, although his journey into wine started long before launching his own label in 2024. Originally pursuing a career in political science, Simon eventually decided that wine was a much more interesting way to spend his life. He went on to study viticulture and oenology, gaining experience in vineyards and cellars across Australia, Alsace and Burgundy. Today, he works with carefully selected growers in McLaren Vale, making small quantities of expressive wines that favour freshness, character and drinkability over sheer power.
His 2025 Field Blend is a particularly charming example of that philosophy. Sourced from a mixed planting in Willunga, it brings together 85% Merlot and 15% Vermentino, co-fermented to create something wonderfully unconventional. The white grapes give Merlot an extra aromatic lift, resulting in a bright, juicy red with a personality closer to young Beaujolais than your typical McLaren Vale Merlot.
Think crunchy cherries, raspberries, red plums and a little floral perfume, with gentle tannins, lovely freshness and a subtle balsamic, savoury twist on the finish. Light on its feet but with plenty of character, this is seriously delicious drinking, particularly with a little chill. A brilliant introduction to Simon's wines and a reminder of just how exciting the new generation of McLaren Vale producers can be.
