Gut Oggau Timotheus Weiss Burgenland Austria 2023
Hazy golden-yellow with a luminous, textured depth, Timotheus 2023 is one of the more structured and contemplative whites in the Gut Oggau family — a wine that leans into grip, salinity and quiet power rather than overt aromatics.
Produced by Stephanie and Eduard Tscheppe-Eselböck in Burgenland, the cuvée is typically based on Grüner Veltliner with Welschriesling, sourced from older vines rooted in limestone and slate. The 2023 vintage brings freshness and structure, with a firm mineral backbone and finely integrated phenolics.
Farming is fully certified under Demeter, and cellar work remains minimal: spontaneous fermentation, extended lees contact and ageing in large neutral vessels, with no fining or filtration.
The nose is restrained yet layered — citrus peel, green apple and quince, moving into white flowers, hay, and a subtle herbal edge. There is a faint smoky, stony reduction that adds complexity without dominating.
On the palate, the wine is textural and grounded, with a gentle phenolic grip framing orchard fruit and citrus. Acidity provides lift, while a pronounced saline and mineral core carries the wine through a long, dry finish. It feels architectural rather than aromatic — built on structure, not exuberance.
