Alex Foillard Cote de Brouilly 2023 Beaujolais

$81 In any mixed 6
$95 Per single bottle

From the north-facing lieu-dit of Chavannes, this Côte de Brouilly comes from a distinctive mix of granite and schist, with a fine layer of sandy topsoil that lends lift and precision to the wine. The site is known for producing Cru Beaujolais of detail and finesse rather than sheer power, and this bottling captures that identity perfectly.

The 2023 is all about clarity and tension: wild strawberry and red cherry drive the aromatics, framed by a cool, mineral line that keeps everything focused and bright. On the palate it is taut and finely etched at first, then opens into a more succulent, flowing mid-palate, finishing long, refreshing and delicately perfumed. There is real finesse here, with a sense of transparency and precision that makes it both highly drinkable and quietly serious.

If the two wines in this release were part of an orchestra, this would be the violin to Brouilly’s viola — higher, more lifted, more agile, but playing in perfect harmony. Together they show Cru Beaujolais at its most compelling: defined, expressive and beautifully balanced.

The Foillard name carries real weight in Beaujolais. Jean Foillard is one of the region’s most influential figures, known for producing wines of purity and understated depth from Morgon, including his iconic Côte du Py. His philosophy helped define the modern natural wine movement in the region. Alex Foillard continues that lineage, bringing the same sensitivity and restraint to Côte de Brouilly, shaped by both family tradition and a deeply personal understanding of the vines.
