Sami-Odi Hoffmann Dallwitz Syrah 2022 Barossa Valley
The 2022 Hoffmann Dallwitz Syrah is drawn from Sami-Odi's prime cask selection across three prized Hoffmann vineyard parcels: DW-OLD planted between 1888 and 1912, ER-27 planted in 1927, and DW-95VSP planted in 1995. Together, these sites form one of the most compelling old-vine sources in the Barossa, combining immense vine age with precision and freshness from younger material.
The wine was assembled from 24 Burgundian pièces after a long 76 week élevage, then bottled in spring 2023 without filtration, fining or sparging, with all transfers handled entirely by gravity to preserve texture and natural detail. Yields ranged between 35 and 51 hectolitres per hectare, with 6,485 bottles filled. The label features a reworked Bank Calendar illustration from 2021, while the rear label shows "Our family as elephants," drawn in 2023.
The 2022 season brings a noticeably more refined and lifted profile compared to warmer, broader years. In the glass there is a beautiful tension between dark fruit concentration and aromatic detail. Blackberry, black cherry and plum sit alongside crushed pepper, dried herbs, olive tapenade and subtle violet lift. There is depth here, but it never feels heavy or overworked.
The palate is precise and finely structured, with layers of dark fruit wrapped around incredibly detailed tannins. The old vine material gives quiet power and length, while the cooler nature of the season keeps everything focused and energetic. Spice, earth and savoury mineral notes build gradually through the palate, with acidity carrying the wine long beyond the fruit itself.
Compared to earlier Hoffmann Dallwitz releases, the 2022 feels more restrained and architectural, less about sheer scale and more about shape, detail and persistence. It still carries the signature density and texture of the site, but with a more transparent and composed feel that suits the Sami-Odi style beautifully.
A deeply thoughtful and finely tuned expression of Hoffmann Dallwitz Syrah, balancing ancient vine depth with freshness, precision and extraordinary textural detail.
