Afianes Raos Dry Red Fokiano 2022 Ikaria
Afianes Winery was established in 1997 on the rugged, windswept island of Ikaria, Greece. Its vineyards cling to steep terraces around the estate, planted on granite-rich soils that lend the wines a vivid minerality. The team works primarily with indigenous varieties — including Begleri and Fokiano — many of which are ancient, ungrafted and pre-phylloxera. Winemaking is traditional and hands-on, often using massive granite patatiria and outdoor clay pitharia for fermentation and ageing. Everything is done naturally, allowing the wines to express the wild, untamed character of the island.
A small, family-driven operation run by Kostas, Nikos, Maria and Eftychia, Afianes makes wines that punch well above their weight. Visiting the estate, you can feel the history in every vine — a true celebration of Ikaria's unique terroir.
The 2022 Raos Dry Red comes from 100% Fokiano vines grown around the estate site at Profitis Ilias, giving it a true sense of place. Bright ruby in colour with a rich, inviting aroma of ripe red and black fruits with a hint of pistachio. What really sets it apart is a subtle olive tapenade note — brief moments of Kalamata olive brine on the palate — adding a uniquely savoury depth that is unmistakably Ikarian.
Well-balanced, approachable yet complex, this is a sensational eating wine with silky tannins and a long, characterful finish. Serve slightly cool at around 16 to 18°C to bring out the juicy fruit and that distinctive island personality. A beautiful match for red meats, mild red-sauce dishes or rich yellow cheeses.
