Agricola Calcarea 'Arrinconao' Moscatel 2024
Juan Jurado is a young winemaker from Seville who fell in love with wine while using hospitality to fund travel, including a lengthy stint in Australia working in wine roles across Melbourne and Byron Bay. That passion led him from the restaurant floor to winery work across Australia, Chile, Spain, and Italy, most notably with Olek Bondonio in Barbaresco.
In 2021, Juan invested his life savings in a plot within Pago Miraflores Alta, one of the most lauded terroirs of the Sherry Triangle, and Agricola Calcarea was born. His neighbours on the same pure white Tosca-type Albariza include Machada-Leclapart's Lumieres site and Marcelo Retamal's Ta/Mira vineyard.
Unlike his neighbours, Juan looks beyond Palomino, reviving old regional traditions with varieties long excluded by the D.O. including Jaen Blanco, Vigiriega, Indiana, and Tintilla de Rota. All his wines are organically farmed with some biodynamic treatments, and all feature some element of skin contact. He operates without appellation oversight, marking his vintages in Roman numerals.
'Arrinconao' Moscatel 2024
'Arrinconao' meaning 'Cornered' comes from a friend's Moscatel parcel in the paraje of Chipiona. It is the most skin-forward wine in the range, with 100% of the fruit macerated before moving to clay amphora for six months, followed by another six months in old barrique. Despite this more hands-on approach, the floral character of Moscatel and the salinity of chalk still dominate, with a natural development of flor from Juan's use of old Manzanilla bota and minimal sulphur.
Grape: Moscatel (Muscat). Vintage: 2024. Region: Chipiona, Sherry Triangle, Andalusia, Spain. Farming: Organic with biodynamic treatments. Vinification: 100% skin maceration, clay amphora six months, old barrique six months, minimal sulphur.
