António Maçanita Verdelho “O Original” 2024
António Maçanita is one of Portugal's most exciting winemakers, recognised for bringing forgotten varieties and unique terroirs back into the spotlight. Through Azores Wine Company, he has become one of the leading voices behind the renaissance of Azorean wine, crafting bottles that capture the wild Atlantic character of these extraordinary islands.
The original Verdelho.
Not the Verdelho from the mainland, not a distant relative or a modern interpretation. This is Verdelho from the islands, a grape shaped by volcanic soils, ocean winds and centuries of Azorean tradition.
Planted in cracks of ancient lava stone at the foot of Pico's volcanic mountain, the vines grow just metres from the Atlantic Ocean, protected by traditional stone walls known as currais. Here, the combination of volcanic rock and sea air creates a wine with a rare sense of place: fresh, mineral and deeply saline.
The 2024 vintage shows the unmistakable energy of the Azores, with vibrant citrus, grapefruit, passionfruit and a subtle tropical lift, balanced by a beautiful oceanic freshness and mineral tension. Fermented naturally and aged partly on fine lees, it has both precision and texture.
A wine of fire and sea. A pure expression of one of Portugal's most fascinating indigenous grapes.
