Cantina Marilina Currivu Rosso Sicily 2024
In south-eastern Sicily, between the San Lorenzo district and the coastal sweep from Noto to Vendicari, Cantina Marilina works in a landscape defined by limestone soils, intense sun and constant sea influence. It’s a part of the island where grapes ripen easily, but real character comes from restraint and timing rather than intervention.
Currivu is built around a blend of Nero d’Avola, hand-harvested from organically farmed vineyards. Fermentation and ageing take place in concrete tanks for around eight months, a choice that preserves fruit clarity while avoiding overt oak influence or sweetness.
The 2024 is immediately expressive. Dark cherry, plum and blackcurrant lead the profile, followed by hints of spice, dried herbs and a faint Mediterranean savouriness. The fruit is ripe and open-knit, clearly shaped by the warm Sicilian climate, but not without freshness.
On the palate it is generous and full-flavoured. There is a juicy, almost jam-like core of dark fruit, supported by firm tannins that give structure rather than aggression. The concrete ageing keeps the texture grounded and direct, allowing the fruit to remain the focus.
“Currivu” refers to a stubborn, determined character — someone convinced of their own way of doing things — and that idea runs through the wine: straightforward, unpolished, and deliberately unforced.
A bold but honest Sicilian red that leans into ripeness and texture while staying anchored in organic farming and traditional, low-intervention winemaking.
