Castro Ventosa is one of Bierzo's foundational producers, with the Pérez family deeply rooted in the vineyards of Valtuille de Abajo. Their wines are a beautiful reflection of the region's old vines, granitic and clay soils, and cool Atlantic-influenced climate, with a style that favours freshness, perfume and site over extraction or oak.

The 2024 Mencía Joven is the most immediate expression of the estate, made from Mencía grown around Valtuille de Abajo and designed to capture the grape in its freshest, most vibrant form. The vineyards sit at altitude on the varied soils of Bierzo, giving the wine both aromatic lift and a lovely mineral backbone.

The 2024 vintage shows Mencía's naturally fragrant side, with bright red cherry, raspberry and wild berries alongside violets, fresh herbs and a subtle peppery note. The palate is juicy and energetic, with fine, refreshing tannins and plenty of natural acidity. There is a savoury, earthy character underneath the fruit that gives the wine considerably more depth than its youthful style suggests.

Light on its feet but far from simple, this is a beautifully drinkable red with the freshness to serve slightly chilled. It is equally at home with charcuterie, grilled pork, roast chicken, mushrooms or a spread of Spanish tapas.
