Champagne Mathieu Nicolas Les Plants de l’Église 2020
Rooted in a family winemaking tradition in the Vallée de la Marne, Mathieu Nicolas is a producer focused on revealing the distinctive character of Pinot Meunier. His Champagnes combine ripe orchard fruit, freshness and a refined, textural style, offering a compelling expression of one of Champagne’s most underrated varieties.
Les Plants de l’Église is an especially distinctive cuvée. Made from 100% Pinot Meunier from Cuisles, the 2020 vintage is fermented in stainless steel before spending nine months maturing in oak. The vineyard sits on a fascinating combination of green clay and limestone, while zero dosage preserves the wine’s natural richness and character.
Luscious and deeply expressive, with aromas and flavours of honey, honeycomb, candied fruit and toasted nuts. A beautiful golden reflection hints at the wine’s richness, while the palate is remarkably round, supple and generous, yet remains fresh enough to stay balanced.
This is Pinot Meunier in an entirely different register: opulent, textural and almost vinous in character. One of the most unique and compelling expressions of Meunier we've tasted, with very little else in Champagne quite like it.
A spectacular food Champagne, particularly with grilled John Dory, rich seafood, cured meats or Wagyu bresaola.
