Collecapretta Lautizio Ciliegiolo 2024 Umbria
Collecapretta is the tiny family estate of the Mattioli family in the hills outside Spoleto in Umbria. The family has farmed here for generations, working a collection of small vineyards planted with traditional local varieties and making wine in an old-fashioned, deeply agricultural way. Farming is organic and cellar work is deliberately minimal, resulting in wines with enormous personality and a strong sense of place.
Lautizio is their expression of Ciliegiolo, a variety prized for its perfume, bright red fruit and naturally supple character. It is made simply, allowing the freshness and aromatic side of the grape to take centre stage.
Wild cherry, raspberry and red plum lead into dried flowers, Mediterranean herbs and gentle earthy spice. Light to medium-bodied, juicy and savoury, with fine tannins and bright acidity running through the palate. There is a beautifully rustic edge underneath all that fresh fruit, giving the wine plenty of character without sacrificing drinkability. Particularly good with a slight chill.
