Commune of Buttons Eurilla Chardonnay 2024
Commune of Buttons is the family label of Jasper and Sophie Button, born from 3.5 hectares of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay planted in Basket Range in the Adelaide Hills thirty years ago. Jasper now manages 4.2 hectares of vines using organic and biodynamic practices: soil regeneration through cultivation, mulch, teas and biodynamic composts; green and regenerative pruning; and dry farming in mature vines. Vintages in Piemonte, Burgundy, Jura and Beaujolais have shaped his approach in the cellar, picking on natural acidity, gentle slow extractions, cool fermentations and minimal racking. All wines are bottled via gravity onsite, and sulphur is added only when absolutely necessary, never exceeding 20 ppm.
Eurilla comes from the Merrow Bank Vineyard, a cool, south-facing 0.7-hectare site sitting at 550 metres elevation with soils of white and yellow clay over sandstone. The vineyard ripens a few weeks later than the home block, owing to its aspect and altitude. The fruit is barrel fermented and aged on full lees with no stirring before extended time in tank prior to bottling.
Chardonnay that balances generosity with precision: refreshing and moreish, with the cool-site tension and lees-derived texture that make this style so compelling. A wine that rewards both the casual glass and close attention.
