David Moreau is one of Burgundy's rising stars, quietly producing wines of exceptional precision from his cellar in Santenay. After studying oenology in Dijon, he honed his craft at some of France's most revered domaines, including Domaine Hubert Lamy and Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, before returning to take over part of his grandfather's vineyards in 2009. In both vineyard and cellar, Moreau favours meticulous, sustainable viticulture, restrained extraction and thoughtful élevage, allowing each parcel to speak with clarity rather than imprinting a heavy winemaking signature.

Sous Montot is a single lieu-dit planted in 1976 on the hillsides of Chassey-le-Camp, just north of Santenay. Here, white marl and hard limestone rich in iron oxide provide an ideal foundation for Pinot Noir, delivering both aromatic finesse and structural definition. The 2023 is vinified with gentle extraction before maturing for around twelve months in French oak, with no new barrels used, followed by a period in tank prior to bottling. This restrained élevage preserves the purity of the fruit while allowing the vineyard's mineral character to remain at the forefront.

The 2023 vintage is remarkably expressive, opening with perfumed aromas of wild raspberry, red cherry, rose petal and subtle blue fruit, underpinned by notes of damp earth, crushed stone and delicate spice. The palate is medium-bodied and finely textured, combining vibrant acidity with silky tannins and impressive depth for a regional Bourgogne. There is a beautiful sense of tension throughout, with savoury mineral nuances carrying the wine to a long, refined finish. A superb introduction to David Moreau's elegant style, it drinks beautifully in its youth but has the balance and concentration to develop gracefully over the next five to eight years.
