Frankland Estate Franc / Cabernet Franc 2024
A vibrant, cool-climate expression of 100% Cabernet Franc from one of Western Australia’s most respected organic producers.
Frankland Estate, established in 1988 by Barrie Smith and Judi Cullam, is today run by Hunter and Elizabeth Smith, and is widely recognised as a benchmark estate of the Great Southern. Their approach is defined by organic farming, minimal intervention winemaking, and a focus on site expression from the isolated Frankland River region.
The Frankland River subregion of the Great Southern (WA) is one of Australia’s most remote and coolest viticultural zones. Its ancient ironstone soils, long ripening season, and strong diurnal shifts produce wines of natural freshness, fine tannin structure, and lifted aromatic precision. Cabernet Franc in particular thrives here, expressing a distinctly cooler, more floral and herbal profile than warmer-climate examples.
The 2024 “Franc” is immediately expressive, showing lifted aromas of redcurrant, cranberry, violets, fresh herbs and subtle spice, with hints of olive, graphite and dark chocolate complexity. The palate is medium-bodied and supple, driven by pure red berry fruit, savoury herbal tones and finely etched tannins. There’s a juicy, textural core that keeps it energetic and highly drinkable while retaining structure.
Fermented and matured with a light, hands-off approach (including time in seasoned French oak), the wine emphasises varietal clarity and regional transparency rather than weight or extraction.
94 points – Halliday Wine Companion
A compelling example of modern Australian Cabernet Franc: perfumed, savoury, and finely structured, with enough depth to cellar while remaining highly engaging in its youth.
