For many wine lovers, Giuseppe Mascarello needs little introduction. The estate's reputation was built on some of Barolo’s most iconic vineyards, yet the Santo Stefano di Perno Dolcetto remains one of the hidden gems of the cellar. Drawn from the historic slopes of Perno in Monforte d'Alba, this is Dolcetto treated with the same care, precision and respect for site that have made Mascarello a reference point in the Langhe for generations.

Santo Stefano is a remarkable vineyard, better known today for producing serious Barolo, but it also happens to be one of the finest homes for Dolcetto. The old vines here deliver fruit with an extra dimension of depth and complexity, while traditional élevage in concrete preserves the vineyard’s character without any distraction from oak.

The 2023 is wonderfully expressive from the first pour. Dark cherries, wild blackberries and violets leap from the glass, followed by hints of dried herbs and earthy spice. The palate is vibrant and full of energy, with plenty of juicy fruit wrapped around fine tannins and Dolcetto’s signature savoury edge. There is real substance here, yet it never feels heavy, making it the kind of bottle that disappears far quicker than expected.

A serious Dolcetto from one of Piedmont’s greatest traditional estates, offering far more character and pedigree than the category often receives credit for.
