Jean-François Ganevat is one of the Jura’s most revered vignerons, a 14th-generation grower whose wines have become cult references for their precision, individuality and extraordinary drinkability. Working organically and biodynamically across an exceptional collection of parcels, Ganevat combines meticulous vineyard work with a minimalist approach in the cellar. His wines possess a Burgundian finesse while retaining the freshness, energy and unmistakable personality of the Jura.

Les Grands Teppes is a particularly exciting expression of Ganevat’s Pinot Noir, sourced from a parcel in Rotalier planted on red Triassic marl with limestone. The vines were planted in 2006, with the site historically being fallow land — hence Teppes, meaning fallow land in the local dialect. The vineyard is farmed biodynamically and the grapes are hand-harvested.

The 2023 is 100% Pinot Noir, naturally fermented with indigenous yeasts following a gentle cold semi-carbonic maceration. The wine was then aged for around one year in clay amphora, an élevage chosen to preserve the freshness and mineral character of the red-marl terroir. It was bottled without fining or filtration and with no added sulphur.

The nose is wonderfully fresh and expressive, with crushed raspberry, blackcurrant, cherry and violet, alongside subtle mineral and spicy notes. On the palate, it is elegant and fluid but has considerably more depth and structure than the delicate Poulsard style for which Jura is often known. Fine, powdery tannins provide shape, while bright acidity and a powerful mineral line drive the wine towards a remarkably persistent finish.

The 2023 has received 94–96 points from The Wine Advocate, with particular praise for the combination of weight, elegance and energy. Despite coming from relatively young vines, there is already impressive depth here, and the wine should develop beautifully over the coming decade.

Precise, energetic and deeply mineral, Les Grands Teppes is a serious Jura Pinot Noir that combines the finesse of great Burgundy with the wild freshness and individuality of Ganevat.
