Jean-François Ganevat is one of the Jura’s most revered vignerons, a 14th-generation grower whose wines have become cult references for their precision, individuality and extraordinary drinkability. Working organically and biodynamically across an exceptional collection of old-vine parcels, Ganevat combines meticulous vineyard work with a minimalist approach in the cellar. His wines possess a Burgundian finesse while retaining the freshness, energy and unmistakable wild character of the Jura.

Les Chalasses Vieilles Vignes is one of Ganevat’s great red cuvées, made principally from Poulsard from exceptionally old vines planted in 1902, with a small amount of the ancient Jura variety Enfariné adding extra acidity and energy. The vines are rooted in grey and white marl, a classic Jura terroir that gives the wine both delicacy and remarkable mineral drive.

The 2023 is a beautifully pure expression of Poulsard. The grapes are hand-harvested and naturally vinified with indigenous yeasts, without fining, filtration or added sulphur. The wine is given a long, gentle élevage, allowing the exceptionally old vines to build depth while preserving the grape's naturally pale, fragrant and ethereal character.

The aromatics are wonderfully lifted, with wild strawberry, redcurrant and rosehip, followed by pomegranate, hibiscus and delicate white pepper. There is also a subtle herbal quality that gives the wine an almost wild, forest-floor character. On the palate it is silky, fine and incredibly energetic, with almost weightless tannins and a beautiful mineral sap.

Despite its delicacy, there is serious depth here. The fruit is bright and pure, the acidity keeps everything vibrant and the finish is remarkably persistent, returning to ripe red fruit, flowers and spice. The 2023 received 93–95 points from The Wine Advocate, reinforcing its position as one of the standout Poulsards of the vintage.
