Lucy Margaux Savagnin Sensual 2025 Adelaide Hills
A textural, high-energy expression of Savagnin from the Basket Range hills, made in the distinctly loose, minimal-intervention style of Lucy Margaux. This is a wine that sits at the intersection of freshness and savoury depth—built more on feel and energy than conventional varietal definition.
The fruit is typically hand-harvested from cool-climate Adelaide Hills vineyards and handled with very low intervention: wild fermentation, minimal sulphur (if any), and ageing in neutral vessels to preserve raw vineyard character.
The nose is expressive and slightly wild, opening with green apple, ripe pear and citrus peel, layered with beeswax, crushed herbs and a faint briny, almost coastal minerality. There’s a subtle oxidative edge that adds complexity rather than weight, giving the wine a slightly untamed aromatic profile.
On the palate, it is dry, textural and finely grippy, with a distinctive Savagnin line of acidity driving structure. The fruit sits in the background—citrus, orchard fruit and white stone—while savoury tones of almond skin, saline minerality and gentle spice take the lead. The finish is long, slightly phenolic and very persistent, with a clean, mouth-watering edge.
Producer background:
Lucy Margaux is a Basket Range–based natural winemaking project in the Adelaide Hills led by Anton van Klopper. The philosophy is uncompromisingly low-intervention: organically farmed or responsibly sourced fruit, wild fermentations, no fining or filtration, and little to no added sulphur. Each wine is made to reflect vintage and site variability rather than consistency, resulting in highly expressive, often unpredictable but characterful bottles.
“Savagnin Sensual” sits comfortably within this ethos—an experimental yet drinkable interpretation of Savagnin that highlights texture, salinity and lift over varietal purity, making it particularly appealing to drinkers who enjoy Jura-style whites and skin-contact wines.
