Few names carry as much collective weight in Barbaresco as Produttori del Barbaresco. As a historic growers’ cooperative founded in 1958, it remains one of the most reliable benchmarks for traditional Nebbiolo, producing a single Barbaresco only in vintages deemed worthy of the entire village.

The 2021 is the first clear glimpse of what many are already calling an exceptional vintage. There is a real sense of density and presence in the glass, with aromas of black cherry, plum, spice and a subtle note of nutmeg, all framed by rose petal and dried herbs. On the palate, it shows medium-rich depth and impressive structure, but what stands out most is the tension running through the wine. Fruit is dark and concentrated yet always lifted, carried by a vibrant line of acidity and finely chalky tannins that feel long, precise and completely free of bitterness.

It is a wine that sits firmly in a classical register, serious without being heavy, structured without losing clarity. Everything points to longevity, with the architecture already in place for extended ageing.

“This wine gives us our first taste of the epic 2021 vintage from a producer as prolific as Produttori del Barbaresco. Bottled in April 2024, this vintage shows the immense power and complexity that likens it to 2016, another year for collectors. The 2021 Barbaresco offers medium-rich density that is transmitted both to the wine's appearance and its mouthfeel. There is black fruit, spice and a touch of nutmeg. However, the wine maintains its youthful tension and energy throughout. The tannins are chalky, fine and void of any bitterness. This is a classical expression of Nebbiolo that gives us good reason to be excited for the upcoming 2021 Barbaresco Riservas.”
