Toolangi Vineyard Chardonnay 2024
Toolangi Vineyard is buried deep in the Yarra Valley on the outskirts of the Toolangi State Forest, established in 1995 and long regarded as one of the Valley's most respected sites. Planted to Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Shiraz, it is best known for producing quintessential Yarra Valley Chardonnay from low-yielding clones of Gingin, Mendoza and I10V3. The vines average 23 years of age and sit in fine clay loam soils. In 2017, Helmut Konecsny purchased the estate and brought winemaker Kaspar Hermann on board, steering the winemaking towards a less worked, site-first style that has steadily revealed the true character and quality of this exceptional vineyard.
After a string of years with poor flowering and low yields, 2024 provided welcome respite for Yarra growers. Along with better yields came powerful, concentrated fruit. The Chardonnay was picked on 2 March, destemmed and pressed directly to French oak (10% new) for fermentation on lees, then matured in wood for nine months.
Attractive and delicious, full of regional charm and eminent drinkability. The 2024 delivers the Yarra Valley pedigree and Toolangi elegance that Kaspar Hermann has made the estate's signature, at a price that continues to surprise.
