Wasenhaus Spätburgunder Landwein 2022
Wasenhaus is one of the most exciting names in contemporary German wine. Founded in Baden by Christoph Wolber and Alexander Götze, the domaine draws heavily on their years working in Burgundy, applying a similarly meticulous approach to Pinot Noir while allowing the distinctive character of Baden to come through.
The Spätburgunder Landwein 2022 is a beautifully refined expression of Pinot Noir from the Kaiserstuhl area of Baden. The vineyards are farmed with a focus on healthy soils and balanced vines, while in the cellar the fruit is treated gently, with spontaneous fermentation and patient élevage designed to preserve freshness, texture and detail.
The 2022 shows the elegance and transparency that have become hallmarks of Wasenhaus. Aromas of wild strawberry, red cherry and raspberry lead into subtle earthy and floral notes, with fine spice and a delicate savoury character. The palate is light on its feet but far from simple, combining silky tannins, bright acidity and an underlying mineral tension.
Rather than relying on ripeness or heavy oak, this is Pinot Noir built around finesse, energy and precision. There is a distinctly Burgundian feel to the wine, but with the brightness and individuality of Baden. A superb introduction to Wasenhaus and a particularly compelling bottle for lovers of elegant, cool-fruited Pinot Noir.
