Vanguardist V Grenache 2024
A deeply expressive and highly refined Grenache from the Blewitt Springs subregion of McLaren Vale, the 2024 V Grenache from Vanguardist represents the pinnacle of Michael Corbett's exploration of texture, perfume and site transparency.
Sourced from the historic Silver Sands Vineyard, planted in the late 1960s by Robert Rende and his father, this dry-grown site sits on deep windblown Maslin sands over alluvial soils. It is this combination of old vines and pure sandy geology that gives the wine its lifted aromatics, fine tannin profile and distinctive mineral tension.
The V range is the most contemplative expression within Vanguardist, shaped by meticulous small-batch fermentation and a focus on finesse rather than power. Extended maceration, maturation in foudre, older oak and amphora contribute layers of complexity while preserving clarity and detail.
The 2024 V Grenache is intensely perfumed, opening with aromas of red cherry, wild strawberry, raspberry coulis and blood orange, interwoven with rose petals, dried herbs, spice and a subtle earthy, mineral undertone. The palate is silky yet structured, carrying fine, powdery tannins and vibrant acidity that extend the wine with precision and length.
There is a quiet authority here, with depth building gradually rather than being forceful. Every element is finely tuned, resulting in a Grenache that is both ethereal and deeply composed.
A benchmark Australian Grenache of detail, elegance and site expression, defined by restraint, perfume and exceptional balance.
The 2023 Grenache leads with all the star anise and pomegranate, graphite, petrichor and garden rose that we have come to expect both of Vanguardist and fine McLaren Vale Grenache. There is no Australian reference point for the style of Grenache that McLaren Vale is able to produce and excel in—it is detailed, aromatic and structurally fine. This has notes of sweet tobacco, crushed shells and nuances of cracked peppercorns. The season was wet and cool, and the wine here is nuanced and detailed. There are dried herbs here, but it is the chalky tannins that steal the show. 13.9% alcohol, sealed under Diam. 97Pts - Erin Larkin, The Wine Advocate. (On the 2023)
